Leon Kirchner: Revelations
Released in 2013
Revelations is Joel Fan’s third album, and an homage to his mentor and teacher, the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Leon Kirchner. The album features several solo works performed by Fan, including “The Forbidden” – Leon Kirchner’s last major piano composition that was dedicated to Joel Fan. Fan also collaborates with singers Diana Hoagland in several songs, and with the conductor Scott Dunn in a choral setting of Dawn, a poem by Frederico Garcia Lorca.
“‘Revelations’ is an apt title for this important recording of diverse works — piano pieces, songs, choral works, most of them little known — by the American master composer Leon Kirchner…the music is alluring, pungent and intelligent, especially in these fine performances, most of them featuring the impressive pianist Joel Fan.” – Anthony Tommasini, The New York Times
“Pianist Joel Fan, who performs on all but one of selections, is an admirable interpreter of this music. His sympathetic readings bring its emotional content to the fore. — An intimate portrait.” —Ralph Graves, Off Topic’d (Full Review)
“In the end we have a judicious survey of some choice small works that piques the interest, heightens appreciation of Kirchner the man and the composer, and satisfies the modern-seeking musical consciousness. Performances are very good, as is sound quality. Recommended!” —Grego Applegate Edwards, Classical-Modern Music Review (Full Review)
